25 years of pub quizzing raises thousands for children’s hospice

A pub in Holywell Bay near Newquay has raised £4000 for charity this year alone from running weekly pub quizzes.

The Truguth Inn has invited keen quizzers through its doors every week to raise funds for Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) Little Harbour hospice in St Austell.

Steve Sutton, the owner of The Treguth Inn, said:

Our Wednesday night quiz has been running for 25 years, and has always raised money for Little Harbour. All together, these quizzes have raised around £38,000.

Royal High School pupils to feature in Strength in Style fashion show at Bath Abbey

Two CHSW Young Ambassadors from Royal High School, Ella and Flora will take centre stage at this year’s Strength In Style fashion show at Bath Abbey on Wednesday 24 September. They have been helping to promote the event over the Summer and have helped with the rehearsals.

Flora, a Year 13 student, explained, “It has been lovely to get our school textile department involved in this show. Knowing the amount of work that goes into the students’ pieces, it will be really special for my peers to be able to present their garments while learning about these amazing charities.”

Children’s Hospice charity shops celebrating Sustainable September

Local children’s charity, Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is celebrating a national initiative to increase awareness of sustainability this month as part of Sustainable September.

The charity has 39 shops across the south west selling goods to help raise funds to run CHSW’s 3 children’s hospices in the region; Little Bridge House in north Devon, Charlton Farm in north Somerset and Little Harbour in mid Cornwall.

Happy Days has been running for 30 years and now has 35 nurseries across the South West and Wales.

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is holding its annual Moonlight Memory Walk at The Lost Gardens of Heligan on 8 November and is currently offering a 30% discount on tickets.

The event is taking place at the well-known Cornish gardens on Saturday 8 November, and tickets currently cost £10.50.

This discount is available until midday on Thursday 4 September. As well as the walk itself, included in the ticket price is a t-shirt, medal, goody bag, pasty and entry into Heligan on the evening.

Last Cornish tin ingot raises more than £14,000 for charity at auction

The last ever ingot of tin to be smelted in Cornwall went to auction last week and has raised £14,144 for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

The auction was held at Lay’s Auctioneers in Penzance on 7 August. The ingot, lot 129, was the very last ingot of tin to be smelted in Cornwall at Wheal Jane, following the closure of South Crofty mine in 1998.

The ingot reached £6,400 through an exciting flurry of bidding from those both in the room and from many around the country and world following online. The Wheal Jane Group then generously match funded the amount taking the total raised to £12

A Cornish garden, well known locally as a favourite location for ‘pick-your-own’, is opening on Sunday 17 August in aid of Children’s Hospice West (CHSW).

Mitchell Fruit Garden in Newquay, just off the A30, will be open for visitors to enjoy from 11am-3pm for just £5 entry. All proceeds will go to CHSW’s Little Harbour children’s hospice in nearby St Austell.

The garden, nestled in the heart of Cornwall, is run by Kim Parish, an award-winning garden designer who hopes to establish Mitchel Fruit Garden as a cultural hub following the creation of a sub-tropical garden and sunflower field.

Her Majesty The Queen visits Little Bridge House children’s hospice to mark its 30th anniversary

A small number of children, their families and staff were delighted when Her Majesty The Queen paid a visit to Little Bridge House children’s hospice on Wednesday 16 July to mark the 30th anniversary of the opening of the children’s hospice based in North Devon. This was the first visit since the death of Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) Co-Founder earlier this year, Eddie Farwell.

‘Pitch while you putt’ networking event at Little Harbour

Little Harbour children’s hospice hosted a networking event with a difference for members of their Business Club.

On Monday 7 July, 35 Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) Business Club members and guests came to the hospice in St Austell for an afternoon of pitch and putt alongside networking.

Before they were allowed out on the green Sam Dickenson from St Austell bravely shared her story about the support CHSW offers to local families like hers when they need it the most. Sam’s youngest son Seth died at the age of 7 following a medulloblastoma, a brain tumour the size of a golf ball. Little
