Bop ‘til you Drop Valentine’s Day Party in Torquay supports CHSW
The Rotary Club of Tormohun in Torquay are organising a lively Valentine’s Day Party, Bop ‘til you Drop, at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club with special performances by Pete & Ian Duo - Sax & Soul and the Pure ABBA tribute group, with all money raised donated to Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) as well as other Rotary charities.
Event organiser, David Rowe, shares the personal reason that CHSW is being supported by the event: “I have been a member of The Rotary Club of Tormohun (Torquay) for over 25 years. Fundraising for charity comes naturally for me even from the age of ten when my parents were involved with fetes for the RAFA, I would be in charge of the stall - 6 darts for sixpence (equal to 2 ½ pence) and also for events for the Scouts. It gives me a great buzz being part of a cog in Rotary, raising money for worthy causes.”
Now David is busy organising the Valentine’s Party “Bop ‘til you Drop”, in its third year, raising money for his local children’s hospice, a charity very close to his heart.
“Having lost my brother Richard, aged eight, when I was 7 years old, Richard was a most amazing and loving brother with a huge heart of gold and a great sense of humour. He spent most of his short life in and out of hospital, both Torbay, Bristol but mainly Guys Hospital in London. He was born with a hole in his heart and back in the 50s/60s such heart surgery was not available, however, today he would have survived no doubt. There was also my older brother Peter, 10 years older, born with “Cerebral Palsy”. He too was an amazing brother (many readers will have known Peter) but as with Richard, both required a lot of one-to-one care.
If a children’s hospice were around then, I’m sure my parents would have been able to use their amazing facilities. Even a week’s respite care would have enabled my mum and dad to step away from the daily demands and challenges of caring for my brothers and also would have supported me as their
sibling. But as a close family we managed.”
The event organisers are looking for donations of auction lots and raffle prizes, and there will also be a bottle of Prosecco awarded each for the best dressed male and female!
Area Fundraiser for CHSW, Daniela Hopkins, shares that she is delighted that Tormohun Rotary have chosen to support CHSW this year at this well-known and popular local event. She says:
“It is always such a pleasure for me to work with passionate people in our community to bring to life their events while at the same time supporting the causes close to their heart. CHSW is a charity that David clearly connects with based on his own family circumstances and I am privileged to support him and the Rotary with their committed fundraising efforts".
