Playing bridge raises £800 for local children’s hospice

Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) Tavistock Friends Group held their annual Bridge Afternoon which raised £800 for the charity.

44 players took part on Sunday 2 March, which was the thirteenth, and final, competition organised by the group.

Sustained by a delicious tea prepared by the members of the Friends Group, they engaged in fierce but friendly competition to raise money for CHSW’s Little Harbour hospice in St Austell.

Little Harbour supports over 130 families from across Cornwall and Plymouth through day and stay visits, as well as home visits and virtual support. It costs around

Ruth Bray from Lincoln won Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) lottery rollover of £5,200 in November.

She told us about her win and what she plans to do with it.

“I was actually in the car travelling to a hospital appointment when I got the call. I didn’t recognise the number, and it was quite the surprise when I was told I had won the money”, said Ruth.

“I am a retired nurse at 50 years, so I decided I would give some of the money to my son and daughter who needed some help with their mortgages.

In 2024, Ethical Power, a leader in the renewable energy industry, chose Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) as their charity of the year, kicking off an exciting year of fundraising challenges. The company raised over £15,000 through a series of fun and engaging events.

Full steam ahead for Lord Oliver Brown locomotive

Following 5 years of restoration, the Lord Oliver Brown steam locomotive is well and truly back in action after being lovingly restored by friends and family of Oliver Brown, an 11-year-old boy from Plymouth who died from a rare blood cancer in 2019.

The train had its official launch on Sunday 9 March, the date of Oliver’s 17th birthday, on Plym Valley Railway where it carried its first passengers in 17 years.

After founding the charity with his late wife Jill in 1991, and following 20 years as Chief Executive, Co-Founder and former CEO Eddie Farwell has handed over the reins to the charity's new CEO.

In late 2024, Eddie Farwell announced his plans to retire with a heartfelt letter to Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) supporters and on 17 March 2025 Phil Morris steps into the role of CEO at CHSW.

Enjoy entry to Pentillie Castle in support of local children’s hospice

A Cornish castle is opening on Sunday 23 March in aid of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Pentillie Castle in Saltash will be opening its gardens for visitors to enjoy from 11am to 5pm for £7.50 entry.

Visitors can enjoy refreshments which will be being served from 12-4pm in the castle.

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is appealing for runners to take part in the Plymouth Half Marathon on Sunday 11 May 2025 in support of its 3 children’s hospices in the region.

Climbing for a Cause: The Channel Partnership Takes on Pen Y Fan for local children’s hospice

The team at The Channel Partnership are taking on an exciting challenge this spring. On Saturday 5 April, they’ll be hiking up the iconic Pen Y Fan to raise vital funds for their long-time partner charity, Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW). Since 2021, The Channel Partnership have been a passionate supporter of CHSW, raising over £7000 through a series of fundraising events and lending a helping hand in volunteer work throughout 2024.

CHSW joins national campaign to change perceptions of hospice care

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is proud to join 143 hospices taking part in the ‘This is Hospice Care’ campaign, a national initiative facilitated by Hospice UK.
