Sophie has the chop for charity
Eight year old Sophie Cocking from Plympton has had a post-lockdown chop like no other after growing her hair for over two years in order to benefit two different charities.
At just five years old Sophie told her parents she would like to donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust to enable children who need it to be able to ‘feel like a princess’. Her parents explained it would involve growing it for a long time and then having it cut very short which Sophie was completely on board with, and so the growing began.
Two and a half years later, and after two rescheduled appointments due to lockdown, Sophie finally had the big hair cut that she had been waiting for. She was delighted to be able to send her luscious locks off to the Little Princess Trust and also donate £630 in sponsorship to Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).
Sophie was inspired to raise funds for CHSW after family friends were supported with respite stays and end of life care at the charity’s Little Harbour hospice in St Austell for their daughter.
Sophie’s parents Debbie and Mark and elder sibling Keira are so proud of Sophie and the fact she has been able to support not one but two charities with her hair cut; “
Sophie has been absolutely amazing throughout and the donations from friends and family have been truly outstanding, we are extremely grateful for their support in helping Sophie achieve and exceed her target of raising funds for CHSW.
Sarah Nuttall-Worsley, Area Fundraiser for Children’s Hospice South West said; “Sophie is such an inspirational young fundraiser. To come up with such a generous idea when she was just five years old and stick with it, while also raising such an incredible amount of money, really is brilliant and I know the children and families that we support will be hugely appreciative.”
