Sisters’ litter pick helps village and children’s hospice
Two young sisters from Uffculme have been helping to look after the environment at the same time as raising money for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).
Lizzie Rock-Evans, age seven, and her sister Hannah, age five, did a sponsored litter pick for CHSW after learning more about the charity while donating a bag of items at the Tiverton charity shop.
Mum Sarah said: “They wanted to know more about what the shop was for and when I explained it was raising money for very poorly children they wanted to do something to help.
“The sponsored litter pick was a great way to raise money for a good cause, improve our local environment and provide a simple way for us to be out and about in the fresh air during lockdown.”
The Uffculme Green Team kindly loaned litter pickers to Sarah and the girls and armed with these and bin bags, they spent around four hours picking litter around the village over two days, raising nearly £250 at the same time.
“My husband Martin and I are super proud of them and also very grateful for all the support we have had from our friends and family who have donated,” added Sarah.
It was really simple to organise and I hope it might encourage others to do the same.
Laura Robertson, CHSW area fundraiser, said: “This is such a super fundraising idea and it’s so lovely to hear how a trip to one of our charity shops helped inspire the girls to want to know more about the charity.
“Every piece of litter they were able to pick and every pound they were able to raise will make a real difference to the environment and to local children with life-limiting conditions and their families.”
