Little Harbour Cook Flies High for Hospice

19 October 2018 chsw Fundraising

Karen Goodman, Cook at Little Harbour children’s hospice, recently embarked on a challenge like no other when she took to the skies strapped to a plane and completed a sponsored wing walk and smashed her target by raising over £2000 for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Day to day Karen is on the team that prepares home cooked meals for all of the children and families that stay at CHSW’s Little Harbour children’s hospice for short breaks and respite. Karen meets families receiving care and support from the hospice every day and sees first-hand how important the hospice at Porthpean is to them both for the medical care as well as the chance to make treasured memories. It was a trip to Bodmin airfield on a day out with some of the children and families that inspired Karen to sign up for the wing walk.

Ahead of her big day Karen was anxious but determined to complete the challenge, she said “Being strapped to a Bi-plane was not on my bucket list let alone my radar however although feeling anxious and excited I threw myself into fundraising for Little Harbour.”

Karen stands proud by her wing walk plane

Karen completed her wing walk on 4th July when she soared above Cornwall on the wing of a Boeing Stearman Biplane which left from Bodmin Airfield.

Following the challenge Karen said:

“Huge Thank You to everyone who has supported encouraged and donated. I must admit that I will never repeat the Wing Walk experience, however I have been totally blown away and inspired. The fundraising has been hard work but also fun and very worthwhile. I feel so lucky and grateful that I am surrounded by the most amazing team, family and friends.

Karen has had months of fundraising including running quiz nights, selling plants and collecting at local events including carnivals and fetes.

Community Fundraiser and colleague of Karen’s Amanda Masters said; “Karen has done incredibly well both to take on such a big challenge and to raise such a fantastic amount of money. Here at Little Harbour it is all about families enjoying the simple things and making precious memories together and this donation will help us to continue supporting families to do this while providing medical and emotional support alongside.”

Reflecting on her job at Little Harbour Karen says “It is the most rewarding, inspiring & emotional job and I love it.”
