Superstar Seven-Year-Old Runs a Mile a Day, Raising £500 for Children's Hospice South West

03 April 2025 CHSW

Seven-year-old Mabel Mackay from Burnham on Sea in Somerset has wowed her community by running a mile every day in March, raising over £500 for Children's Hospice South West (CHSW).

Mabel

After taking part in her local 6-mile Santa Run across the muddy Mendips in December, hosted by the Queen Victoria Pub in Priddy, Mabel was inspired to take on this incredible challenge in support of Charlton Farm, her local children’s hospice in Wraxall.

Mabel embraced her daily runs, enjoying the spring sunshine and even joined local park runs on weekends to mix up the route. Despite catching a bug, Mabel stayed determined and pushed through, making sure to end the day with a mile under her belt.

Her inspiring efforts have not only raised vital funds but also sparked conversations about the invaluable care CHSW provides, an idea she conceived entirely on her own.

Mabel’s dad, Innes Mackay, added: “We are really proud of Mabel. Her focus and determination are really what make her so special. She’s extremely passionate about running and helping others, so this has been a great opportunity for her to combine them.”

Lucie Perryman, Area Fundraiser for CHSW, said: “Mabel is a true superstar! Her incredible determination throughout March has been inspiring. The funds she has raised will make a meaningful difference in supporting local babies, children, and young people with life-limiting illnesses. She is truly an inspiration to everyone.”

Children's Hospice South West has cared for children and young people with life-threatening conditions for over 30 years, providing children's hospice and professional family support services.

The charity provides care and support to families living in the South West who have children with life-limiting conditions, including specialist palliative and hospice care for the whole family, a sibling support service for brothers and sisters, emergency support, end-of-life care, and a bereavement service.
