Motorcyclists gear up for second charity bike show

19 July 2024 CHSW

The roar of engines will be filling Bristol this summer for an annual charity bike show

Members of the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) are revving up ready for their second Bike Show at St Peter’s Church, Lawrence Weston, on 26 August in aid of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

The family-friendly show will see bikers from across Bristol showcase their machines and there will be motorbike related stalls, face painting, a bouncy castle, a café selling cakes and cream teas and a barbecue. There will also be music throughout the day, including a DJ.

The event will also have the support of the Nailsea Bikers group and the Bristol Bobbers who will be judging the bikes with categories including best custom, best three-wheeler and best classic. There will be stalls from the Motorbike Action Group (MAG), Mental Health Motorbike, Docbike and Motosafe.

The day will run from 10am to 4pm and there is a £2 entry fee for bikes. Entry for the general public is free.

The inaugural bike show, held last year, was hugely popular and raised more than £1,000 for CHSW – a total organisers are hoping to beat this year. Christian Motorcyclists Association Bristol branch Vice Chairman David Ball said: “The event was very well received last year and we had around 50 bikes on show. We had bikers from across Bristol and some from as far away as south London.”

David has a personal reason for supporting CHSW.

His son Jon and daughter-in-law Imogen were supported by the charity after their baby Joseph, who had been diagnosed with Edwards Syndrome, died during childbirth in 2022. Jon, Imogen and their 3 year-old son Barney were supported by the charity’s Little Bridge House children’s hospice in Barnstaple during Imogen’s pregnancy and after Joseph’s death.

Children’s Hospice South West was just incredible, the family stayed at Little Bridge House after Joseph died and were supported through an extremely difficult time of their life. My other grandson Barney was just 3 years old at the time and the care and love the staff gave him was just incredible at the same time as allowing the family to deal with their grief.

David has ridden motorbikes since the age of 16 and still has his first bike – a treasured Honda 50. His daily ride is a Honda Deauville 650 and he also has a BSA Bantam.

Area Fundraiser Amanda said: “We had a great first event last year. This year we have more family activities to enjoy and we are hoping to encourage more visitors this year to help support the incredible work of the Children’s hospice South West. The money raised will go a very long way to providing help for local families and support them in their most difficult and challenging times."
