Fundraising pirates raise thousands for local charities
A fundraising group from St Austell have raised thousands for local charities.
The Pirates of St Piran are a non-profit, charity fundraising group, who perform all over Cornwall and Devon to raise money.
They are a shanty band who perform traditional sea shanties and original songs in full pirate costume, playing at festivals, pirate events and taverns all across the two counties.
So far they have raised £98,000 for local charities, including Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), The RNLI and the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust, along with many other causes in their local area.
Captain Swillin’ Billy Flynn, a member of the group, said: “We hope to hit the £100,000 mark for charity donations early next year. The money is raised from our gigs, collection buckets, our CD sales and music downloads.”
The group have supported Little Harbour, CHSW’s hospice in Porthpean, St Austell, for many years. They recently visited the hospice and presented a cheque of £1000; donations which they collected at performances over the last year.
This latest donation takes their fundraising total to CHSW to over £10,600.
Bethany Rudge, Area Fundraiser for CHSW, said: “We are so grateful for the continuous support the pirates have shown CHSW over the years.
Fundraising comes in many wonderful shapes and forms, and this group with their singing, costumes and shows prove that. Thank you so much again from everyone who uses Little Harbour’s services.
Little Harbour provides free support to children with life limiting illnesses and their families, including respite, palliative care, end of life care and bereavement support. The hospice also offers stays, as well as support in families’ own homes.
