Claudia's curls are chopped for charity
Nine year old Claudia, from Derriford in Plymouth, has had more than 12 inches of her hair cut in support of not one but two special charities.
Claudia had been growing her hair for years and decided that if she was going to have it cut she wanted to donate the hair to Little Princess Trust. The charity provides free, real hair wigs to children and young people, up to the age of 24, who have lost hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.
As Claudia also celebrated her 9th birthday during lockdown she decided with her parents that the money that would have been spent on her birthday celebrations would also be donated to Little Princess Trust by her parents to go towards making one of their wigs.
And she didn’t stop there! Claudia then managed to raise £1020 in sponsorship collected from friends and family for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) a local charity which runs Little Harbour children’s hospice in St Austell. Little Harbour supports children who are unlikely to live into adulthood due to often very complex medical conditions, Claudia’s aunt works in CHSW’s charity shop in Tavistock.
Claudia’s mum Michelle said; “We thought many of our friends and family would like to support Claudia and by getting them all involved it would mean we could support another very deserving charity.
Children’s Hospice South West is an amazing charity and this fundraiser has shown just how much we appreciate the work they do. The charity is very special especially during some of the toughest days in a family’s life.
Claudia had the big chop on 29 April at The Hair Bar in North Hill and since then has donated four plaits of 12 inches of hair to Little Princess Trust along with a donation to make a wig and £1020 to CHSW.
Sarah Nuttall-Worsley, Area Fundraiser for CHSW said; “It is always humbling to see the generosity and kindness that comes from children wanting to fundraise to help other children. Thank you to everyone who sponsored Claudia and for helping to raise such a generous amount of money.”
CHSW has three children’s hospices in the south west including Little Harbour in St Austell. The hospice has remained open throughout the pandemic providing resilience stays, symptom management and end of life care as well as virtual support and home visits ensuring continued support for the whole family.
